Well-being and Life Skills Initiative

Thrive Together: The Well-Being Initiative starting this October 2026

Six live trainings series (two hours each) for all staff plus hands-on group and individualized coaching.  Two live Resilient Leadership series trainings  (two hours each) for directors/activity leaders only. plus leadership coaching.
This cohort is a "hybrid" learning experience. By registering for this series, you are committing to attending all training sessions, both in-person and virtual.

Let’s be real: you can’t pour from an empty cup. In youth work, protecting your mindset isn't a luxury, it’s the foundation for everything you do. When you show up grounded, healthy and supported, the youth in your program notice and follow your lead.

This in-depth, six-part cohort series is a community space designed for afterschool professionals who want to do more than just "get through the day." Together with a tight-knit crew of your peers, you’ll dive into practical strategies to manage stress, navigate conflict, build emotional intelligence and protect your mental health. You won't just learn theory; you'll gain a ready-to-use toolkit with templates to create a safe, vibrant afterschool space where both you and your youth can truly thrive. You will learn to teach your youth to regulate their emotions and behavior, to meet their needs and to solve their own problems.

What is Afternoon Meeting?

The Afternoon Meeting is the out-of-school time complement to the Morning Meeting that helps to ensure continued well-being and life skills are being built with a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. focus. Morning/Afternoon Meeting is an interactive group practice that teaches explicit well-being and life skills to youth. The Afternoon Meeting, like the Morning Meeting, entails an intentional circle gathering where the adult models and facilitates four activity segments, namely, the Greeting, the Sharing, the Activity and the Message.

Each segment is designed to:

  • incrementally build positive adult-youth and youth-youth communication and interaction,
    engage youth in positive behavior,
  • provide opportunities for adult and youth to build well-being and life skills,
  • promote fairness and leadership opportunities by giving youth voice and choice during meeting activities,
  • create explicit connections between well-being and life skills and academic learning.

The Afternoon Meeting also provides an opportunity to apply signature Well-being and Life Skill practices that teach youth how to transition their hearts and minds from one activity to another so that these practice may become more integrated across the out-of-school time program.
